THE FUTURE SCREENWRITER'S RESOURCE GUIDE

MEDIA RESOURCES
While there are multiple books on the practice of screenwriting, John Truby’s The Anatomy of Story stands out in the way it outlines a comprehensive, step-by-step process for writing a script that’s compelling from start to finish. The book is geared towards beginners, people who haven’t written scripts before and may be intimidated by not knowing how to approach one. Different chapters focus on how to write effective characters, settings, narratives, scenes, and symbols so that they relate to and support the main ideas behind each work. The book describes techniques in detail, and when followed, they create a story that is fresh and worth reading.
Video
There are multiple channels on YouTube, such as Every Frame a Painting and Channel Criswell, which explores how narratives and cinematic techniques help to build captivating motion pictures. One channel, Lessons from the Screenplay, focuses on what makes certain stories work effectively. For example, the channel offers a video on Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, and how it uses elements from noir cinema to communicate the ideas behind the movie. Michael, the host of the channel, summarizes how the film portrays its antagonists in an empathetic light, the police as cold and unlikeable, and its protagonist as a mediator outside the two to create a sense of mixed morality in an unfair world. Almost every video Michael creates takes this shape; They look at a film with strong narrative structure, then describe how that structure benefits the movie, educating and hopefully inspiring potential writers.
News
There’s a myriad of online outlets, from Variety to Hollywood Reporter to The A.V. Club, which all report on entertainment related news. However, Birth.Movies.Death. is one website you may not have visited which focuses only on cinema. This site offers reviews, podcasts, and general news articles on films ranging from popular blockbusters to forgotten cult classics, and is an excellent way for someone to expose themselves to more movies.
